Topic Summary
This committee is dedicated to tackling the pressing issues of arms control and disarmament in the Israeli-Palestinian region. The Israeli-Palestinian conflict dates back nearly a century, filled with multiple different wars, protests, UN proposals and treaties. It began in the late 19th century, leading to the establishment of Israel in 1948 and subsequent displacement of Palestinians. However, on the 7th of October, 2023, Hamas invaded Israel by launching a major surprise attack, killing around 1,200, mostly civilians, and taking more than 240 hostages. Ever since, Israel has reinforced their military action on the Gaza strip, with deadly airstrikes and shootings, almost every day. Due to this, hundreds of thousands of Gazan citizens are suffering from famine, water shortage, PTSD, major physical injuries, and other human rights violations/war crimes, including what many denominate as genocide. On top of this, an estimate of 30,000 people have been killed since October 7th, with 29,782 being Palestinian and 1,410 Israeli. Additionally, in Gaza, around 70,500 have been injured, 2.2 million are experiencing crisis levels of food insecurity and 1.7 million have been internally displaced. The committee prioritizes enhancing border security to address immediate concerns and contribute to regional stability. Its mission extends beyond mere crisis management, it seeks to lay the groundwork for a more secure and peaceful future for those directly impacted by the tense conflict. Through a comprehensive approach encompassing disarmament initiatives, diplomatic engagements, and the reinforcement of border security, the committee endeavors to contribute meaningfully to resolving the deep challenges in the region.
